Stevenage Expert Witness Gains Unique Accreditation

A leading Stevenage based licensed insolvency practitioner has received accreditation from a prestigious scheme for expert witnesses.

Norman Cowan of Wilder Coe LLP Business Recovery undertook the course in support of the increasing argument for better training for expert witnesses.

The Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness (CUBS) Programme has been running for three years and Norman is one of the first professionals in the region to achieve accreditation.

Norman comments: “An expert witness is someone who gives an independent opinion on the facts of a court case. They are entitled to give that opinion because of their qualifications and experience. However anyone presenting a case in a court of law should be equipped with the necessary skills in order to present their report and comments accurately and correctly. Certain high profile cases where alleged expert witnesses’ evidence has led to convictions which were later quashed, have caused for many professionals to call for formal training. I was already a member of the Expert Witness Institute however this qualification goes one step further.

“As a licensed insolvency practitioner I am often called upon to act as an expert witness in some notable cases involving loss of profits, valuation of businesses, wrongful trading and misrepresentation. I decided to undertake this unique course in recognition of the need for accreditation. This may be the only course of its kind at the moment however I hope the trend will continue and more expert witnesses will be encouraged to undertake the necessary training.”

The Bond Solon Expert Witness Programme consists of five 1-day modules covering report writing, courtroom skills, law and procedure.
