I chose to work at Wilder Coe because they recruit trainees with diverse degrees and experiences. My background is in Art History, so I am grateful to work with audit trainees and colleagues from various backgrounds, like me!
After five years working in the arts sector, my last role in a leading art gallery focused on managing the expenditure for the team. I enjoyed the finance element and decided to qualify as an accountant.
I’m studying the joint ACA/CTA qualification, where I gain experience across the audit and tax teams.
Studying the ACA/CTA qualifications is challenging, switching your brain between audit and tax can sometimes be tricky. Whereas the audit work focuses on owner-managed businesses, my tax work deals with individuals and their income.
However, having such a varied workload, operating with different colleagues and on diverse projects is a rewarding experience.
If I could give future audit trainees some advice, first, I’d say, “You can do it”. It doesn’t matter what your degree is; you can start your journey to becoming a qualified accountant, as I have found in my experience.
Find a revision routine that works for you. I find revising before work most effective whilst I have a fresh mind!
Finally, question practice! It can be tempting to read lots of theories whilst revising. In practice, doing the questions is the most effective way to succeed.
