Writing Charitable Objectives

Are you thinking about setting up a new charity?  Writing charitable objectives and purpose is crucial in creating a strong foundation for your not-for-profit organisation. It can be one of the most difficult elements in the registration journey, and using the right language and understanding the requirements is key.

Here are some tips to help you create meaningful and effective charitable objectives.

WHAT

Clearly define your mission

What is the overarching goal of your new organisation?

Your charitable objectives should clearly define the mission and purpose of your charity.

You must ensure this is one of the 13 allowed charitable purposes, defined by the Charity Commission website.

WHERE

What will your reach be?

Will the charity operate in the local area or have a greater reach?

Specify this in the purpose but do not be too restrictive i.e. naming a county rather than a town so that there is the ability to expand in the future without additional approval from the Charity Commission.

WHO

Clearly define who will benefit

Charities need to be for the ‘public benefit’ and must benefit a significant section of the public.

You can specify which section of the public, i.e. children in poverty or specific animals such as dogs or cats.

HOW

Are you tackling the problem?

Try to be as clear as possible without being too restrictive.

For example, rather the restricting to one sport such as football, word it to cover sports generally so that there is the ability to expand and that the focus is not too narrow.

While it’s important to focus on short-term goals, also consider the long-term impact of your objectives.

Consider how your charity’s work contributes to lasting change or improvements in the community or cause.

Long-term charitable objectives show potential supporters that your charity is committed to sustained positive change.

Gain trust

Setting realistic and achievable charitable objectives is vital for gaining trust and support from future donors and the community. Concrete and measurable goals demonstrate that your charity is serious and capable of making a tangible impact.

Infuse your charitable objectives with passion and commitment. Convey why your cause matters and what drives your dedication to making a difference. Authenticity and passion are compelling and inspire others to support and get involved with your charity.

Seek help

Don’t hesitate to seek feedback from trusted individuals in the charitable sector or your community. Getting input from others provides valuable insights and ensures your objectives resonate with potential stakeholders.

Writing charitable objectives for your new charity is a crucial step that sets the stage for the impact you hope to achieve.

By clearly defining your mission, being specific and realistic, considering long-term impact, aligning with legal requirements, communicating passion and commitment, and seeking feedback, you can craft charitable objectives that resonate with others and set your charity on a path to success.
